I’m a bit concerned at the moment that it won’t have enough content to go the distance long term, with only two enemy factions (so far as we know), procedurally generated levels that can feel a bit one-note, and pelo real live-service roadmap at launch, but with such a strong, effortlessly fun foundation, it’s definitely off to good start. With all the over-the-top gore and patriotic pageantry of Starship Troopers, Helldivers 2 is the kind of wonderfully silly shooter that me and my friends could easily lose many Friday nights to.

For example, some enemies are so heavily shielded they can only be put down by explosive weapons capable of tearing through the steel, so you’ll want to have at least one player who can call down the Recoilless Rifle, a rocket launcher that’ll make short work of anything that stands in its way. It’s especially cool that any equipment summoned can be shared with anyone on the team, encouraging teamwork and allowing your friends to benefit from your untimely demise by looting your corpse.

Despite the blurry image, the 60fps performance mode is the place to be - it's mostly at the target, dropping into the 50s in the heavier scenes. The 30fps quality mode is OK, but prone to frame-pacing problems and the occasional, genuine drop beneath the performance target.

These days, it's pretty rare for new shooter games to be exclusively PvE. Helldivers 2 is, though, as there's not a single PvP mode in the game, and there aren't any plans for one in the future, either. Helldivers fight for Super Earth together, after all!

Given that the original Helldivers from 2015 is still exclusive, though, we don't suggest getting your hopes up.

We're still making our way through Helldivers 2, so be sure to check back soon for even more helpful tips and tricks as we discover them!

The prompt for it appears in the War Table menu once you've flown to a planet and have a difficulty selected.

offers the opportunity to customize your weaponry to your playstyle, so you’re free to play around and find a style that suits you so you can confidently take part in the Galactic War.

Your progress contributes to the overall war effort, and brings you closer to liberating that sector of the galaxy.

And with friendly fire always on and bad guys far outnumbering my ragtag crew of four, dying at some point or another felt like a certainty. This was especially true when we attempted to complete a level on the hardest difficulty and were utterly grinded to a pulp, which was hilarious and a complete blast even in humbling defeat. I’m really looking forward to seeing if I can actually best one of these levels once my character’s been properly leveled.

We also learn a little bit about how important it is to strategize with your comrades to avoid lacking essential amour or equipment for certain enemies which you’ll inevitably need to face.

More 128TB SSDs are coming as almost no one noticed this launch — another SSD controller that can support up to 128TB appeared paving the way for HDD-beating capacities

Helldivers 2 is a mighty fun time especially with friends, family, and anyone you might want to “accidentally” flatten with a supply package.

On a high-end system using a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with RTX 4090, we're typically looking at frame-rates in the 90s with settings fully maxed out at 4K Helldivers 2 Gameplay resolution. That's solid performance, but you'd probably want to engage some amount of resolution scaling if playing on a high refresh rate display. Normally, toggling on DLSS would be a no-brainer, but of course temporal upscalers aren't supported in this game at the moment. On a more mid-range PC (we looked at a Ryzen 5 3600 with RTX 2070 Super), we get decent enough performance, as long as we're willing to take a settings hit and move down to 1080p resolution on medium settings. Here, we're typically just above 60fps, and while this isn't enough to achieve super high frame-rates at a decent resolution, it's certainly capable of providing a good experience. Stuttering in-game isn't an option, but this seems to happen when launching into a match, but from there on out, gameplay is refreshingly smooth.
